Handing over BuildCraft development

Dear all,

As you might have seen over the past few weeks, BuildCraft development intensity has dramatically decreased, along with my involvement in the community. This is due to a clear diminution of my time, both for personal and professional reasons. Everything is going great on these two ends, nothing to worry about, but I’m no more able to commit to the 15+ hours of work per week on BuildCraft that I have been putting together over the first 9 months of the project.

From the very beginning, this project has been designed to be community driven. This was one of the main reason why it has been Open-Source to start with, and why lot of work has been put together to allow people to sub-mod it. Time has now come to go to the next step, that is actually giving the development responsibility to a community of developers.

Krapht and SirSengir have volunteer to take over and co-lead the project. You probably know them from the amazing work they’ve done on the Logistic Pipes and Forestry mods. They’re probably among those who have the best understanding of the code internals. Please join me in welcoming them at the head of the BuildCraft mod!

The team will probably evolve over time. I will stay around for a long time, passing code expertise around and implementing couple of features. In particular, there is work to do in the SMP area that definitely fall down in my court. I will also continue to administrate the website.

Cheers all,

- SpaceToad

  1. Thank you for the awesome work you have done and the time you have put in developing buildcraft. I will do my best together with Sengir to keep it going, and I hope that you will be able to be there to guide us along the way =)

  2. I think that Buildcraft will be in good hands with you and SirSengir.

    Dr_Weird_

Ps: Could you try to make a multiplayer version of your pipes?

  3. Thank you for creating a great mod!
Thank you for working to keep it alive as your priorities shift! We all really appreciate the fact that you aren’t just abandoning the project!

  4. Good to see you, and thanks for all the work you have already done !

Thanks to Krapht and SirSengir for taking over the projet :)

  5. Some very capable hands that you’re leaving Buildcraft in — I have every confidence that Sengir and Krapht will do amazing work! Congrats to you two, and good luck to you Spacetoad. Don’t be a stranger now :) .

  6. I cannot express how much I appreciate the work that you have put into Buildcraft. It has practically ruined the original game though. :D

However, you are handing over to one of the neatest mods I have come across. Forestry. So brilliant.

I will see if I can start doing something useful for the community.

  7. Thank you Spacetoad, for your more than awesome contribution to the minecraft modding scene and I wish you best of luck in whatever you decide to do next. I believe I’m not the only one when I say I’m excited for the 2 new guys taking over. Good luck Krapht and Sengir!

With great power, comes great responsibility :D

  8. I’m completely hooked on this mod and would love to see it continue to be developed. Welcome new guys and great job so far Spacetoad. Upward and onward right?

  9. Thanks for the mod SpaceToad! You sure transformed the Minecraft experience for many users, may the BuildCraft mod continue to evolve for the better. Good luck on all future endeavors SpaceToad!

  10. When I saw the title, I was pretty worried that the new owner(s) would be bad(like with CI…). But once I saw Krapht and SirSengir, I knew that the mod will stay strong :) Good luck with everything, SpaceToad, and welcome, Krapht and SirSengir :)

  11. Sorry to hear that Spacetoad, but I’m happy with the choice of your “successors”.
Does this mean that Logistic Pipes, Forestry and Sneaky Pipes will all be eaten and integrated in the core buildcraft? :D (I sure hope so, while I don’t mind them being separated, I’d sure like to see the new stuff in BC build upon the combined potential of all that)

    • I think that adding those three add-ons is a great idea! But the two ones that they should add right now are Sneaky Pipes and Forestry. Logistics pipes is fantastic but it is still in major development. Sneaky Pipes are great, realistic, and stable enough to be added into the vanilla BuildCraft.
If they do become part of Buildcraft I have a suggestion, could you have the void pipe create forestry ash? Also if Forestry is added I think that will open up a world of possibilities for IC2 compatibility!

  12. aww it sad day here i thinks this is the greatest mod ever and spacetoad loved the videos to hope you go on to bigger and better things wish you all the best and ty for great time in mine craft to the new guys you have some rep to live up to there welcome

  13. Congrats guys!

I know both of these dev’s quite well (not in person), I play with both of there mods often, and iv gotta say, they won’t disappoint bc!

Ah ah ah ah staying alive!

  14. Thank you SpaceToad for your wonderful work, and hopefully in the future, further involvement, even if minor. Love your mod.

Good luck in your future ventures

    :)

  15. Thanks SpaceToad for all the work and effort you put into this. This mod has brought many people many smiles and we all thank you. You were a revolutionary force in the modding community and we will miss you. Thank you for everything you have done for the community. So as a community lets not let SpaceToad down guys! Long live buildcraft!

  16. SpaceToad’s Buildcraft was the first real mod I ever used. Since then, I cannot even play MC without it. Started early—with redstone, redstone torches, and no engines. A truly brilliant, superior innovation. Only natural then to follow with, also from the beginning(s) of, SirSengir’s Forestry and Krapht’s Pipes. That has to be the absolutely correct/perfect call for these two guys to implement the continuation of this excellent project. Huge thanks and gratitude to all three of you in your efforts to give so much enhancement and enjoyment to so many people. Thank you.

  17. oh good, at first i thought that you would stop making buildcraft altogether. but it is good to know that a team is at work on it now. ps as an update could you make it so if you connect a waterproof pipe to an auto crafting table with, say an water bucket, it makes more water buckets?

  18. I’ll admit it… I panicked a bit when I read the first two lines… but I started to feel a bit better when I got to the part that mentioned Sengir and Krapht.

SpaceToad isn’t leaving, more the team is growing.

  19. This is the first mod i ever used, and the only one i have really immersed myself in, I’m looking forward to seeing how buildcraft evolves and i know that the mod are in good hands. It is also very good to know that you won’t just up and disappear.

Thank you for all your work for the community ^^

  20. Big thanks for all the work youve put into it Spacetoad!

Best wishes for good sucess to Krapht and SirSegir.

  21. best wished to the new coders.
If i can i will drop some ideas on the forum for you 2. also try fusing some of those additional mods if possible.

Who is controlling the buildcraft server, haven’t seen a mod in weeks and i am on on almost daily basis. trying to sort of unite the left overs of the server

    Thank you, SpaceToad! Good luck!

  23. This was the first mod I ever used and it has always been my favorite. I am sad to hear spacetoad is leaving us but I’m glad he left his work at the hand of somepeople who know how to mod. Thank you spacetoad for your work and welcome kraft and sirsegir!

  24. BC is one mod I can’t ever play MC without, and I have you to blame/thank for that.

Thank you for making such a wonderful add on to minecraft and for the time you’ve put in to establish this as a must have for any minecraftian.

  25. BC was my first big mod and I still love the piss out of it.

I’m curious to see how this affects technic pack as it’s my understanding that the new guys have differing opinions on that.

  26. Hello, I didn’t find any way how to get your email or pm you here, so I have to post it as comment. I would be willing to help with the developement of buildcraft, how could I become part of the developing team?

    • You can’t. Krapht and SirSengir are going to co-develop it, like SpaceToad said.

      • “co-lead”
        “at the head”
“The team will probably evolve over time.”
        Reading comprehension.

  27. I might cry. In my opinion SpaceToad has done more for Minecraft than Notch or Jeb.

  28. I think the thing I’ll miss most about you Spacetoad, is listening to your voice in all the videos.

  29. from what i have seen of forestry and logy pipes build craft is in good hands
keep up the good work !!!

  30. First of all, I’m happy to hear you are doing ok! I was kinda worried when you went silent.
And about handing over Buildcraft, You couldn’t have found more capable hands! Thnk you and THNX to Krapht and SirSengir!

  31. Spacetoad I followed your mod from nearly the beginning and have had much enjoyment with it. The logistical pipes and other mods also enhance the game in various ways also so I wish to welcome and thank Krapht and SirSengir for taking on the responsibility of keep this great mod going. I hope Spacetoad pops in from time to time since he has made buildcraft one of the best mods available.

It is also my hope that some of the other great mods like logistical pipes are integrated to make buildcraft better then ever and will work more with industrialcraft 2 over time being 2 of the best mods around.

  32. So since you are handing over Buildcraft to SirSengir and Krapht will they also be in charge of updating Forge or will you still be doing that?

  33. Hi, I’ve only had the buildcraft mod for like 4 days and i already fell in love with it. If u ask me or any other minecrafter who’s tryed this mod, they’d tell u tht Notch shud make it automatically built in with each minecrafters client. I only have one thing to ask of SirSengir and Krapht… When is the minecraft 1.2.3 version of Buildcraft coming out ??? :(

    • SirSengir and Krapht are working on it. According to the development page, 3.1.x has been converted to 1.2.3. However, there are still 5/13 issues remaining before 3.2.0 (which I believe will be the actual release, but I might be wrong).
I am watching the development page like a hawk. I have no clue how far off it is in reality, but I will keep watching.

  34. congratulations Krapht and SirSengir! I don’t know alot about personally coding stuff but if you need a tester, balancer, or opinion. i’m always around, specially on weekdays as ya’ll can see from the forumns. if there is any way i can assist in the continuation if this magnificant mod, let me know. ^.^

  35. Thanks very much for this awesome mod!
One of the best mods for Minecraft ever, cant play without it anymore almost. Hope this mod will be that awesome that it have been untill now!
Good Lock in life and have fun ;)

  36. Merci pour tout Space, pour ce superbe mod; il restera génial… mais je n’ai pas bien compris (à cause de Google Tarduction ^^) tu continue (mais moins) a modder avec les autres ou tu arrête totalement ?

  37. Hi, I just saw the RP2 update. I can understand why your stepping away/down from buildcraft. I have been a big fan of buildcraft since you started it. I have always been amazed at what you created, the quarry was so great and original when you first released it. RP2 has always been my second fav mod, and the way its heading, it will take over. But buildcraft will always be my fav. Thanks for making it, and making mincraft all that much better. Can’t wait to see what other people add to it now, logistic’s pipes are great. I haven’t played around much with the bee’s but forestry’s is a nice mod too. Thanks again Spacetoad, btw I love the name, I want a spaceship in the shape of a frog/toad now :-)
Good luck with whatever you do.
    Bobster

  38. I only hope that the new devs understand that unlike forestry, buildcraft isn’t supposed to be really easy and exploitable. They MUST keep buildcraft the way it is in terms of the way players can use the mod. E.X. Teleport pipes “COOL” breaks point of the mod, Hydro energy “COOL” breaks the point of the mod, Auto tree harvesting “COOL” breaks the point OF THE FUCKING MOD! If you want that tree harvesting you need to be creative and design an elaborate device using multiple tools to do it. having it handed to you on a silver platter like in forestry is not what buildcraft is about. REMEMBER THAT!
