Handing over BuildCraft development

Dear all,

As you might have seen over the past few weeks, BuildCraft development intensity has dramatically decreased, along with my involvement in the community. This is due to a clear diminution of my time, both for personal and professional reasons. Everything is going great on these two ends, nothing to worry about, but I’m no more able to commit to the 15+ hours of work per week on BuildCraft that I have been putting together over the first 9 months of the project.

From the very beginning, this project has been designed to be community driven. This was one of the main reason why it has been Open-Source to start with, and why lot of work has been put together to allow people to sub-mod it. Time has now come to go to the next step, that is actually giving the development responsibility to a community of developers.

Krapht and SirSengir have volunteer to take over and co-lead the project. You probably know them from the amazing work they’ve done on the Logistic Pipes and Forestry mods. They’re probably among those who have the best understanding of the code internals. Please join me in welcoming them at the head of the BuildCraft mod!

The team will probably evolve over time. I will stay around for a long time, passing code expertise around and implementing couple of features. In particular, there is work to do in the SMP area that definitely fall down in my court. I will also continue to administrate the website.

Cheers all,

- SpaceToad

Better Then BuildCraft

Happy new year to you all!

And to celebrate this new year, I’m very happy to announce the release of a new collaborative effort, Better Then BuildCraft, an integration between Better Than Wolves and BuildCraft made by FlowerChild himself! As of today, it’s built on top of the standard BuildCraft 2.2.11. Check out the trailer video:

In short, this integrations provide a comprehensive tech tree between the two mods. Key BuildCraft recipes have been changed to fit the new gameplay. All details are available from FlowerChild Minecraft’s post http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/910330-10-better-then-buildcraft-v-10-upd-dec-31st/. Enjoy!

Minecraft 1.0.0 is out – I am aware of it

Yes I know, Minecraft 1.0.0 is out. BuildCraft 2.2.x and 3.0.x will get ported in due time. Don’t expect anything to happen before two weeks though. I’m currently in vacation and will not have time to put together the required development and validation time required for supporting this new version before coming back. Also, Notch tends to make minor releases after a major one, although this is probably the result of the 1.9 stabilization, it’s better to wait and see.

Going Wide Open

BuildCraft 2.2.5 is on the way. Bug fixes are slowly reaching the “minor” category. There’s a couple of SMP fixes to go, plus some minor tweaks here and there. This version will be the first of the 2.x branch flagged as stable – and 1.x is now officially discontinued. Note that SMP will remain shaky on large and complex systems. This is due to current Minecraft limitation, but things are likely to improve over time.

For those who have been following the development on SourceForge, you may be interested in knowing that I’m slowly moving BuildCraft development to a codesion forge. Thanks to your generous donations, as well as sponsored adfly links, I am now in position to purchase this kind of service which will help greatly the work. But don’t worry, the development is still public, you will still have access to the Subversion repository, and you will still be able to browse through the tickets.

As a matter of fact, BuildCraft is getting even more open. Some may have noticed that, though the sources are available, BuildCraft was not completely Open-Source according to the OSI definition. This has been brought to my attention, and SourceForge has made the (fair) request to fix this matter or remove the project from their environment.

While considering various options, and deciding to re-host BuildCraft on Codesion, I choose to fulfill Open-Source requirements anyway – the two decisions being uncorrelated. In short, the BuildCraft distributions rights which were closed are now opened, under certain restrictions.

This will open the door in particular to various mods packs. I would like to stress the fact that until now, there is no mod pack that is allowed to contain BuildCraft (except Arrgh’s one who asked permission very early on). Making BuildCraft OSI-Open-Source does not make any of this pack any more allowed. There are specific conditions to redistribute these mods. If you’re intending to make such a pack, or would like to make your non-allowed pack allowed, please make sure that you fully understand BuildCraft License (http://www.mod-buildcraft.com/MMPL-1.0.txt), and post on the forums if you have questions.

Note that the distributions conditions affect not only mod packs, but anyone modifying or copying parts of the BuildCraft code. If you intend to make a BuildCraft sub-mod, and already have one, please check the license as well. In short, if you never ever copied parts of the BuildCraft sources, if you did not modify any source, of if you’re just including non-modified versions of the API, you don’t have to worry. Otherwise there are requirements to fulfill that may or may not make your work possible if you don’t want to fulfill the license terms.

I hope opening up the BuildCraft community will bring some new enjoyable game into play!

SMP and World Contest

Hey y’all!

Couple of information on the current stage of things. With regards to SMP, the situation has definitely improved since last releases, however, things starts to go bad as soon as the world becomes reasonably complex. I’m working on getting decent reproducers to investigate, but please be patient. If you experience any problem, please make sure that you do get a backtrace otherwise reporting is just useless.

Other point, the world contest. Deadline is extended until October 31st. Last days to finish your work or re-submit an updated version!

A new BuildCraft site

Following increasing difficulty of maintaining the BuildCraft original post on minecraftforum, I finally decided to give to BuildCraft its own website. Hopefully, information will be easier to organize here than it was before.

There is a huge amount of feature to come to BuildCraft. Currently finishing SMP and a few bugfixes for BuildCraft 2.2.1. Stay tuned for further news!

And just in case you missed it, here’s the tutorial of the latest BuildCraft version:
