I’ve been playing around trying to find the optimum power source for a quarry, with mixed results. Has anyone found a setup that will allow for maximum speed of the quarry without the fear of explosion?
I’ve tried 3 steam engines daisy chained and they work nice and fast, however I had an unfortunate incident with the engine in direct contact with the quarry. It overheated rather quickly (< 5 mins) then blew up. I've also tried with only two engines and while that never blows up, it doesn't go as fast either.
I'm looking for a way to run the quarry as fast as the first setup, without the bang at the end.October 24, 2011 at 5:57 pm #987
Pump water to the engines.
Use conductive pipe to send energy to the quarry.October 24, 2011 at 6:02 pm #989
Sorry, I should have specified… I am trying to do this with steam engines. I don’t have the lava/oil/fuel reserves to support long term operation of a combustion engine(s) at the time, however I have a TON of coal/charcoal. I was under the impression that steam engines couldn’t be cooled?October 24, 2011 at 7:41 pm #1008
You could try to put some electric pipes between the quarry and the engines as a buffer. Have the engines point to one or more wooden electric pipes and then direct that one into the quarry. Dunno if you have to use a normal electrified pipe between the wooden and the quarry though. But that way you can get some distance between that expensive quarry and relative cheep engines. So if they do blow up they won’t take the quarry with them. Also I believe that you can connect engines from more than one side at at time, so if two works from one side you could do 8 (2+2+2+2, above, below, left, right) and leave one exit open for chest/piping items out. Just don’t put one in front of the quarry as it will be destroyed rather quickly =)
I use Zeldo’s teleport pipes to teleport the power from my engine room to my quarries. That is so nice it almost feels like cheatingOctober 24, 2011 at 10:29 pm #1019
Good point, I think rather than expending my resources trying to maximize the steam engines, I’m going to work on getting a reasonable quantity of oil and run combustion. Then I can run an engine room and use power rather then direct connection, and be able to pipe water in for cooling
Thanks guys.October 25, 2011 at 4:03 am #1044
I was surprised when I started using fuel (used lava before that) about how efficient it is. My engines seemed to run forever on a very small quantity and the quarry just zipped along with just a single engine behind it.October 25, 2011 at 4:38 pm #1069
Well at the moment i have A total of 160 combustion engines that power 1 big quarry and i was wondering if i add more will It have much effect on it ?October 25, 2011 at 4:42 pm #1070
Someone just posted some numbers in association with output and usage, so check out:
