From what I understand, single player is now much closer related to multiplayer in that you can open a single player game up to external clients. Will that break all existing single player mods including Buildcraft 3.x, or are modded games simply not going to work properly if people do connect via LAN?

All mods must be updated for 1.3. No mod developed for 1.2.5 will work on 1.3. When BuildCraft 3.2.x is ready it will have support for LAN.
A LAN server is basically the same as a normal server. Like with normal servers, I think the players connecting to you would need to have the mod installed.
I don’t think anything will happen if they connect without, but the client won’t know how to render blocks without the textures. There might also be some logic left on the client that I don’t know about. Maybe trying to connect will give an error message.

Buildcraft 3.x for Multiplayer IS out.
I don’t think this’ll be a problem.

Buildcraft seems to have turned into a second priority for sengir, and Krapht seems to have disappeared to either mess with 1.3 or because of IRL stuff.
The problem isn’t the server version being unstable; Forestry works really well on 1.3.2, buildcraft will as well. The problem is that both developers are either being secretive or working on their own stuff.
Another problem is how much buildcraft relies on the client. That will require a pretty big rewrite.

I don’t totally agree with you, andrewreeses.
Just check Direwolf20 MC 1.2.5 Server Play to see all changes made in BC 3.1.6
SirSengir and Krapht have done a great job to BC3
Mods are not easy to update from 1.2.5 to 1.3.2.
So, I understand that SirSengir updates Forestry before BC because he coded all Forestry himself and it helps to see the many many many … Forge API modifications for MC 1.3.x.
As always BC3 will be ready for MC 1.3.2 when it’s ready.
